    In the central part of the reverse is a relief image of a saint lying down, covered with a blanket. Two people stand on either side of him. To the right of the image is the letter "R", denoting the mint mark of Rome. Along the arc of the left and right edge of the coin is an inscription in Italian: "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO" - "VATICAN CITY". Below is the denomination of 50 lire: "L.50".
  • Obverse
    In the central part is a left-facing profile portrait of Pope John Paul II. Below the shoulder truncation are the artist's initials: "VEROI" - Guido Veroi. In the left part, along the arc of the coin's edge, is an inscription of his name in Latin and the 3rd year of his pontificate: "IOANNIS PAVLVS II P.M. AN. III". On the right is the year of issue in Roman numerals: "MCMLXXXI".
