    At the top, along the edge of the coin, the English text 'EAST AFRICA'. Below, the year of issue '1939', flanked on both sides by raised diamond-shaped elements. In the central part above the hole, the numeral 5, with crossed tusks on either side.
  • Obverse
    Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised dots. To the left and right along the rim are English inscriptions: 'GEORGIVS VI' and 'REX ET IND: IMP:', separated at the top by a British crown, translating to 'George VI King and Emperor of India'. In the central part below the round hole, the inscription 'FIVE CENTS'. Below that, the Birmingham mint mark 'KN'.
