Reverse Along the left edge arc is the country name 'NEW ZEALAND'. On the right is the inscription 'HALF PENNY'. The year of issue '1946' is at the bottom. In the center is a figure of a Hei-Tiki with three-fingered hands pressed to its body and a large head tilted to the side, considered a symbol of birth and fertility. Floral ornaments are on either side.
Obverse The edge of the coin features a decorative raised toothed pattern. Along the arc of the coin's edge on the left, top, and right is the English text 'GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR'. In the center is the left-facing profile of King George VI. Below the neck truncation are the letters 'HP' — the engraver's mark of Thomas Humphrey Paget.
