In the central part, against a background of a nest, water, and shoreline vegetation, a loon is depicted facing right. Above and below are horizontal inscriptions in English: above '1 DOLLAR', below the country name 'CANADA'. Beneath it is the mintmark of the Ottawa, Canada mint – a maple leaf.
Obverse
In the center is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. In the truncation of the portrait are the Latin letters 'SB' – the artist's mark for Susanna Blunt. To the right and left of the portrait, the Latin inscription is split into two parts: on the right - 'ELIZABETH II', on the left - 'D∙ G∙ REGINA' (Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen). Below is the year of minting '2004'. Around the circumference along the rim are decorative raised dots.
