Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised dots. Along the upper edge arc, the country name Japan in Japanese '日本國'. In the central part is depicted Zenko-ji Temple, located in Nagano, and the deity of mercy Kannon - a Bodhisattva (manifestation) in the form of an ox. On the left, the text in English 'NAGANO', below it in Japanese '長野市' — Nagano, the city and prefecture of the same name, located on Honshu Island.
