    In the central part, an image: The Virgin Mary stands upright with arms outstretched, a halo above her head, before her are kneeling people with hands folded in prayer, behind her part of a city, stylized like wings. Below the image is the mint mark of Rome – 'R'. Along the edge of the coin are inscriptions in Italian: from left to right the name of the state 'CITTA’ DEL VATICANO' (Vatican City), below – 'L.50' (50 lire), flanked on both sides by a dot.

    In the central part, the right profile of the Pope is depicted. Along the edge of the coin from left to right runs text in Latin - 'IOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. AN IX' (John Paul II Supreme Pontiff 9th year), and the Gregorian year of minting '1987' in Roman numerals 'MCMLXXXVII'. Below the truncation, the artist's name Angelo Canevari 'A. Canevari'.
