    In the upper part, a floral pattern with eight petals. In the lower part, the numeral 1, below it along the rim the inscription "ESCUDO". To its left is the artist's signature of Helder Batista – "H. BATISTA", to the right is the mintmark of the Lisbon Mint – "INCM". This issue features a double line pattern.
  • Obverse
    In the center is the coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield, its border charged with seven castles, in the center a smaller shield with five shields arranged in a cross, each bearing five bezants. Above is a rope-like naval knot. Along the arc of the coin's edge on the right, bottom, and left is the country name in Portuguese "REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA" (Portuguese Republic) and the year of issue "2001". Between the words are quatrefoils.
