Reverse In the central part (within a circle of dots) is a three-line inscription 'ONE CENT 1896'. Around the circumference, along the rim, is an oak branch with sixteen leaves. Decorative elements in the form of dentils are also present.
Obverse In the central part, within a circle of dots, is the left-facing profile of Queen Victoria. An inscription arches along the edge of the coin from left to right: 'VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA.', meaning 'Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen.'. In the lower part, arching along the edge, is the country name 'CANADA' in English. Around the circumference, along the rim, are decorative raised dentils.
