In the central part, a three-masted steam-powered armored frigate is depicted sailing to the right on ocean waves. Smoke is coming from its funnel. To the right above the horizon line is the year of minting '2004', to the left on a wave crest is the designer's mark of Thomas Pesendorfer - 'TP'. Along the arc of the left and upper edge of the coin is the inscription in German 'Panzerfregatth S.M.S. Erzherzog Ferdinand Max' (Armored Frigate His Majesty's Ship Erzherzog Ferdinand Max). At the bottom in German is the country name in two lines 'REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH' (Republic of Austria) and the inscription '20 EURO' (20 Euro).
