    In the center, a palm tree within a circle, flanked by the denomination '1/2 CENT' in Sinhala '1/2 සතය' and Tamil 'சதம்'. Around the perimeter, inscriptions in English: on the left the colony name 'CEYLON', at the top and left 'HALF CENT', at the bottom the year of issue '1940'. A decorative border of raised dots follows the curve of the coin's edge.
  • Obverse
    In the central part of the coin, the left-facing profile of King George VI of Great Britain wearing a crown. Along the rim, the name and titles of the monarch in English: 'GEORGE VI KING AND EMPEROR OF INDIA'. Below the truncation, the initials of the British medallist Percy Metcalfe - 'PM'. The coin's edge features a toothed pattern.
