Around the upper edge of the coin, from left to right, is the Latin inscription 'PORTUGALIAE ET ALGARBIORUM REX', meaning 'King of Portugal and the Algarve'; below is the year of minting '1874', flanked on both sides by raised four-petaled flowers. In the central part is the Roman numeral 20 'XX' within a wreath formed by olive and oak branches, tied at the base with a bow.
Obverse
Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised denticles. Around the edge in the right, bottom, and left sections is the Latin inscription 'LUDOVICUS I DEI GRATIA', translating to 'Luís I by the Grace of God', with all words separated by raised quatrefoil elements. In the center is the lesser coat of arms of Portugal crowned with an imperial crown: on the heraldic shield are five escutcheons arranged in a cross form with bezants, and around the main shield is a wide bordure with seven castles. The heraldic shield is framed by raised linear patterns.
