In the central part, 'XX' - the Roman numeral 20, with the letter 'R' on all four sides, all framed by an ornate vignette. It bears a countermark from the period 1809-1837. Around the edge, a Latin inscription: 'MODERATO SPLENDEAT. VSV', translating to 'Moderation illuminates', and the mint year 1697, separated by two dots and a four-petaled flower. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
Obverse
In the central part, the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Portugal. To the right, bottom, and left along the edge, Latin text: 'PETRVS.II.D.G.PORTVG.R.D.ÆTHIOP', the title of King Peter II of Portugal. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
