Reverse In the upper part, following the curve of the coin's edge, is the text in Portuguese 'REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA' — the name of the Portuguese Republic. Below, the year of minting '1920' is flanked by two rosettes in the form of dots. In the central part is a large numeral 1, with the inscription 'CENTAVO' below it — '1 centavo'.
Obverse Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised dots. In the central part is depicted the lesser coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield on an armillary sphere. On it are five escutcheons with bezants arranged in the shape of a cross. The edges of the large shield feature a wide border with seven castles.
