    In the central part, a large numeral 5 on the left; on the right at the top, a two-line inscription in English 'EURO / CENT', translating to 'five euro cents'. Below the inscription is a symbolic depiction of the globe with the outlines of Europe against a background of six slanted parallel lines, with 12 stars at their ends. Near the rim on the right is the engraver's mark of Luc Luycx 'LL'.

    Near the rim on the right and left are 6 stars each, symbolizing the countries of the European Union. At the top, the country name in French 'MONACO'. At the bottom, the year of mintage 2001. To the left of the date is the mintmark of the Paris Mint — a cornucopia; to the right is the personal mark of mint master Gérard Buquoy — a horseshoe. In the central part is the coat of arms of the Grimaldi princes, the ruling dynasty of Monaco. The French heraldic shield is divided lozengy into argent and gules. The shield is encircled by the chain of the Order of Saint Charles, entwined with oak leaves. Supporters — monks armed with swords. The mantle is gules, trimmed with a golden ribbon and lined with ermine fur. The shield is crowned with a princely crown. Below on a ribbon is the motto 'Deo Juvante'. Translation: 'With God's help'.
