    In the central part — an armillary sphere on a background of a widened cross. Along the edge of the coin, in the spaces between the ends of the cross, inscriptions in Latin: «SUBQ.», «SIGN.», «NATA», «STAB.», which translates as 'Under this sign he was born and will remain'. On the armillary sphere is placed a heraldic shield, in the central part of which, in the shape of a cross, are 5 small shields each with five bezants. Along the edges of the large shield is a wide border with seven castles.

    Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised denticles. Along the edge of the coin is a Latin text «JOANNES D G PORT ET ALG P REGENS», translating to 'John VI by the Grace of God of Portugal and the Algarve Regent'. The beginning and end of the inscription are separated at the top by the Imperial Crown. In the central part, between two branches tied at the base with a ribbon, are the following elements: under the crown, the large numerals «160»; below, the year of minting «1818»; beneath it, the symbol «R» — the mint mark for Rio de Janeiro, flanked on both sides by raised elements in the form of dots.
