The inscriptions are separated by images of a flower resembling a cornflower. The rim is decorated with decorative elements in the form of dentils.
Obverse To the right, top, and left is an inscription in Spanish: 'REPUBLICA DE LA NUEVA GRANADA', which translates to 'Republic of New Granada'. In the central part, the shield of the coat of arms of Colombia, entwined with a laurel wreath. In the lower part, along the curve of the coin's edge, the date 1849, separated from the inscription by dots. The rim is decorated with a decorative element in the form of dentils.
