The central part features the denomination «МОНЕТА РУБЛЬ» (COIN ROUBLE) in two lines. Above the denomination is the Crown of the Russian Empire. Below the denomination is a decorative divider consisting of two oppositely directed ornamental lines with a small raised dot between them. Slightly below this divider is the coin's year of issue «1853», beneath which is the abbreviation «С.П.Б.» (Saint Petersburg Mint). Along the left edge of the coin is a laurel branch, and along the right edge, an oak branch. The bases of the branches are tied together with a ribbon, the knot of which forms a bow. The entire edge of the coin is stamped with raised denticles.
  • Obverse
The central part depicts the State Emblem of the Russian Empire – a double-headed eagle, its heads crowned with two imperial crowns, with a third, larger crown above them. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow – a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the right). Surrounding the shield is the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. On the wings are the titular coats of arms: on the right – Kazan, Astrakhan, and Siberian; on the left – Polish, Taurican, and Finnish. In its right talon the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left – an orb. Below the right talon is the letter «Н», below the left – «I». These are the initials of Mintmaster Nikolai Iossa. The center of the obverse is enclosed within a braided border. At the top is an eight-petalled rosette, visually indicating the start of the inscription: ЧИСТАГО СЕРЕБРА 4 ЗОЛОТНИКА 21 ДОЛЯ (PURE SILVER 4 ZOLOTNIKS 21 PARTS). The rim is decorated with short denticles.
