    To the right of center, a man sits on a chair in front of a writing desk on which a gramophone stands. On the other side of the desk, a woman stands adjusting the sound-reproducing apparatus. In the central part, English text 'GRAMOPHONE 1887'. Above, a cameo featuring a left-facing portrait of Emile Berliner, with the inventor's name and years of his life in three lines to the right: 'EMILE BERLINER 1851-1929'. Along the edge of the coin in English: at the top 'INVENTIONS OF THE MODERN WORLD', at the bottom in two lines '1 CROWN'.

    At the center is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. In the truncation of the portrait are the initials of the British sculptor Raphael David Maklouf - 'RDM', below the truncation the Latin letters 'PM' - the mintmark of the Pobjoy Mint, Surrey, Great Britain. Around the circumference along the rim are English inscriptions: on the left the monarch's name 'ELIZABETH II', on the right the name of the British Crown Dependency 'ISLE OF MAN' and the year of issue '1996'. Along the rim are decorative raised denticles.
