Reverse Along the upper edge of the coin, from left to right, is the inscription 'REPUBLIKA . PORTUGUESA', meaning 'Portuguese Republic'. Below is the mint year '1968', flanked by two rosettes. In the center, against the background of a broad cross, is the lesser coat of arms of Portugal: a heraldic shield on an armillary sphere. The shield features five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each with bezants. The edges are bordered by a wide band with seven castles.
Obverse The coin's edge features a decorative raised pattern of rounded denticles. Along the upper edge is the name of the Portuguese province of Cabo Verde in Portuguese: 'CABO . VERDE'. Below is the inscription '5 $0O', meaning 'five escudos'. The inscriptions are separated by rosettes on the left and right. In the center is the coat of arms of the province: a heraldic shield on an armillary sphere, divided per pall and topped with five towers. Between the towers are four small shields with the Cross of the Order of Christ. The left third of the shield shows a fragment of the Portuguese coat of arms; the right third depicts a sailing ship on the ocean; the bottom third shows waves.
