In the central part, an inscription in two lines '500 FRANCS'. Along the left and right arcs of the coin, a palm branch. Below, an inscription in three lines 'UNITE EGALITE PAIX' (Unity, Equality, Peace). Above the first word on the left, a cornucopia (mintmark of the Paris Mint), on the right - a dolphin (privy mark of the chief engraver Emile Rousseau).
Obverse
Along the upper arc of the coin runs the text 'REPUBLIQUE DE DJIBOUTI', below the year of issue - '1989'. In the central part is the national coat of arms: a laurel wreath, inside which are depicted a shield and a spear pointing upwards, topped with a five-pointed star, on either side - a hand holding a traditional dagger.
