    The lower part depicts a Petri dish with a culture and a microscope. Above the dish is the English text 'ANTIBIOTIC DRUG PENICILLIN 1928'. In the upper part is a cameo portrait of Alexander Fleming, with his name in English and his years of life 'ALEXANDER FLEMING 1881-1955' to the right. Along the edge of the coin in an arc are English inscriptions: at the top 'INVENTIONS OF THE MODERN WORLD', and at the bottom in two lines '1 CROWN'.

    Centered is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. In the truncation of the portrait are the initials of the British sculptor Raphael David Maklouf - 'RDM', below the truncation are the Latin letters 'PM' - the mintmark of the Pobjoy Mint, Surrey, United Kingdom. Around the circumference along the rim are English inscriptions: on the left the monarch's name 'ELIZABETH II', on the right the name of the British Crown Dependency 'ISLE OF MAN' and the year of issue '1995'. The rim is decorated with raised denticles.
