In the central part, within a circle, the numeral 5. Around it are the nine coats of arms of the Federal States of Austria: Vienna, Burgenland, Upper Austria, Vorarlberg, Carinthia, Styria, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol. The coats of arms are positioned with their base towards the center, forming a sun-like pattern. Along the upper edge of the coin, in a circular inscription in German, is the country name 'REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH' (Republic of Austria), and along the lower edge the inscription 'EURO' (Euro).
Obverse
Against a background of Arctic ice, a polar bear with a cub and a walrus are depicted. In the background, the three-masted schooner 'Admiral Tegetthoff' is icebound, with a bird above it. In the lower part, along the edge of the coin, is the German inscription 'ABENTEUER ARKTIS' (Arctic Adventure), above it the year of issue '2014'.
