    A six-pointed star is inscribed around the central hole. The legend 'BRITISH WEST AFRICA' runs along the upper edge from left to right. The mint year '1941' is at the bottom, flanked on each side by a dot. The rim is decorated with ornamental teeth.

    Central hole surrounded by the denomination: 'ONE PENNY' above in English and 'وَاحِد پَنّي' (Wāḥid Pannī) below in Arabic. Above is the Crown, symbol of the British Empire. The Latin legend 'GEORGIVS VI REX ET IND: IMP:' (George VI King and Emperor of India) is split along the rim: the monarch's name 'GEORGIVS VI' on the left and his title 'REX ET IND: IMP:' on the right, with a stylized ornament below each part. The edge is decorated with raised ornamental teeth.
