Along the upper edge in English: "JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM". In the central part is a rectangle, surrounded by an inscription in Japanese: "地方自治", which translates as: "LOCAL AUTONOMY". Along the lower edge: "500 YEN" and the issue date in the Japanese era: "平成21年" - the 21st year of Heisei, 2009. The coin's rim features decorative dot elements.
Obverse
Along the rim are inscriptions in Japanese, at the top: "日本国" - "JAPAN", at the bottom: "五百円" - "500 YEN". The central part depicts a Kentoshi-sen - an ancient ship of the imperial envoy to China. Below is the inscription Nara in two lines, above in English: "NARA", below in Japanese: "奈良県".
