    A chrysanthemum flower is depicted at the top. In the center is the inscription '20 sen' written vertically in Japanese: "二十錢". Along the edge arc are two branches tied with a bow at the bottom: paulownia on the left, chrysanthemum on the right. Decorative raised denticles are placed along the rim.

    Along the rim are inscriptions in Japanese: on the left, "日本大" - "GREAT JAPAN"; on the right and top, the year of minting: "明治三十年" - "30TH YEAR OF MEIJI" or 1897 in the Gregorian calendar. In the center is a dragon. Below it is the inscription '20 sen' in English: "20 SEN". Decorative raised denticles are placed along the rim.
