Reverse Along the upper rim, the country name in English: 'AUSTRALIA'. To the left, a raised element in the form of a seven-pointed star. To the right, the engraver's initials 'KG' of Edward Kruger-Gray. At the bottom, the inscription 'PENNY'. In the central part of the reverse, a raised depiction of a kangaroo, with the year of minting '1957' below it.
Obverse Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised dots. Above them is the inscription 'ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F: D:' — the full Latin text 'Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensor', English translation: 'Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith'. The beginning and end of the inscription are separated by a cross. In the central part, the right-facing profile of the young Queen Elizabeth II.
