In the upper part, along the edge of the coin, is the name of the great navigator in English: "JAMES COOK". In the center is his right-facing profile portrait. On the truncation of the neck are the letters "JB", denoting the initials of the designer: George James Berry. Below the portrait is the English text: "EXPLORER of the PACIFIC", an image of waves, and the years of Cook's voyages: 1769 - 1779.

In the upper part, along the edge of the coin, is the name of the country, Western Samoa, in the country's main language: "SAMOA I SISIFO". In the center is the national coat of arms. Above it is the year of issue: 1970, below is the national motto: "FA'AVAE I LE ATUA SAMOA" - "SAMOA IS FOUNDED ON GOD". At the bottom is the dollar sign and the numeral 1: "$1".
