In the central part, a three-quarter left-facing portrait of Christopher Columbus. Around the edge of the coin, an inscription in Spanish: «V CENTENARIO DEL DESCUBRIMIENTO Y EVANGELIZACION DE AMERICA», translated into English: «Fifth Centenary of the Discovery and Evangelization of America». At the bottom near the rim, separated from the inscription by two five-pointed stars, the mint year 1992. An eleven-sided polygon is inscribed within the circular rim.

In the central part, the coat of arms of the Dominican Republic is depicted. To the left of the coat of arms, the numeral «1», below it an inscription in Spanish: «PESO» - 1 peso. At the top and right along the rim, the country name in Spanish: «REPUBLICA DOMINICANA». In the lower part along the curve of the coin's edge, the mintmark abbreviation for the mint in Ottawa (Canada). An eleven-sided polygon is inscribed within the circular rim.
