Along the upper rim on the right is the English inscription "BUTUT", and on the left, the same in one of the official languages. The central part features three groundnuts. To their right is a large numeral 1.
Obverse
Along the upper rim is the country name "REPUBLIC OF THE GAMBIA". Below is the year of issue "1998". The central part depicts the national coat of arms: two lions holding a heraldic shield with a crossed axe and hoe. Above the shield is a helmet adorned with a palm branch. At the base is the motto in English: "Progress — Peace — Prosperity".
