    In the central part, a red-billed hornbill (Tockus erythrorhynchus) is depicted facing left on a tree branch. Above, a two-line inscription in Setswana reads '5 THEBE' (5 Thebe).

    In the central part, the coat of arms of the Republic of Botswana. It consists of a traditional shield featuring: three cogwheels in the upper part, three wavy lines in the center, and a bull's head in the lower part. At the base, the motto 'Pula' (Rain), with a sorghum stalk on the right and an elephant tusk on the left. Below the coat of arms, the year of minting '1988'. On the left side, along the coin's edge, the country name 'BOTSWANA', and on the right, the inscription 'IPELEGENG' (Self-Reliance). All inscriptions are in Setswana.
