Reverse In the central part are three zebu heads (left, center, right). Above is the inscription '1 FRANC', below the name of the French protectorate 'MADAGASCAR'. On both sides of the image are plant branches. Along the edge of the coin is a patterned border. All inscriptions are in French.
Obverse Against a background of ships is the left-facing profile of Marianne in a winged Phrygian cap. Below the ships is the mark of the Chief Engraver Lucien Georges Bazor: left 'L.Bazor', right 'G.B.'. Along the edge of the coin is the French text 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE UNION FRANCAISE'. At the bottom is the year of issue '1958', flanked left by a cornucopia (mint mark of the Paris Mint) and right by an owl (mark of the Mint Director Raymond Joly).
