On the shield, within a circular ring of evenly distributed stars, is depicted an armillary sphere on a background of a cross pattée.

The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles. Along the rim: on the left, top, and right, the Latin inscription 'PETRUS.II. D.G.CONST. IMP.ET.PERP. BRAS.DEF.', translating to 'Peter II, by the Grace of God and the Constitution, Emperor and Perpetual Defender of Brazil'; at the bottom, the mint year '1845'. In the central part, within a circular wreath, are the large numerals '400'.
