    In the left part, a right-facing profile portrait of the English naval officer James Cook; in the right part, a left-facing sailing ship on waves. The portrait is flanked on both sides by dots; below the truncation are the navigator's life years '1728-79'. Above the waves, the ship's name in English 'H. M. S. RESOLUTION'. Around the edge of the coin, the text: at the top in English 'BICENTENARY•CAPTAIN JAMES COOK•1779', at the bottom the year of issue '1979', to the right of which are the artist George James Berry's initials 'JB'.

    In the central part, the coat of arms of Western Samoa: against a background of radial patterns, a heraldic shield with a stylized depiction of the 'Southern Cross' constellation, sea waves, and a coconut palm. Above the shield is a cross, on the sides are olive branches. At the base of the coat of arms, the motto 'God is the foundation of Samoa' in the Samoan language 'FA’AVAE I LE ATUA SAMOA'. In the upper part, around the edge of the coin, the name of the state 'Western Samoa' in the Samoan language 'SAMOA I SISIFO'; at the bottom, the inscription '$ 1' (1 Tala).
