Reverse The central part features a kangaroo - a national symbol of Australia. Below it is the year of mintage: 1959. To its right is a seven-pointed star. Along the upper edge arc is the country name in English: 'AUSTRALIA'. Along the lower edge arc is the text in English: 'HALF PENNY'. To its left is the initials 'KG' - the mintmark of Melbourne Mint designer George Kruger Gray. The coin's edge features raised elements in the form of dots.
Obverse The central part features the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. Around the edge of the coin is a Latin inscription, divided by a cross: 'ELIZABETH II DEI. GRATIA REGINA F.D.' - Elizabeth II by the Grace of God Queen, Defender of the Faith. Along the rim is a dotted relief pattern.
