    In the central part, within a circle, a German three-masted barque is depicted sailing to the right. Below is a wind rose, flanked on both sides by an anchor and three five-pointed stars. Inside the wind rose is a globe, above the lower part of which the mint year '1996' is placed. At the top is the ship's name in German 'GORCH FOCK'. The coin's edge features a pattern resembling a marine rope.

    On the left, top, and right, the state name in French 'REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN' (Republic of Benin). The country's coat of arms is located in the central part. It consists of a quarterly heraldic shield: the upper left quarter features a castle, the upper right - the Star of Benin, the lower left - a palm tree, and the lower right - a sailing ship. The shield is supported by leopards and is topped by a crest consisting of two twisted cornucopias filled with grain and sand. At the base of the coat of arms is the motto - 'Fraternity, Justice, Labor' (Fraternité, Justice, Travail). In the lower part, along the arc of the coin's edge, is a two-line inscription in French – '500 FRANS CFA' (500 CFA Francs).
