Reverse
In the central part of the reverse is a relief, front-facing Australian echidna; the numeral 5 is placed in the background of the animal. Below the image are the initials of the designer Stuart Devlin - 'SD'.
Obverse
In the central part is the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain wearing a crown. In the neck truncation are the initials of the British sculptor Raphael David Maklouf - 'RDM'. Along the rim are inscriptions in English: on the left the monarch's name - 'ELIZABETH II', on the right the country name 'AUSTRALIA' and the year of issue '1986'.
