    In the central part, an inscription in Kirundi in three lines: "5 FRANCS AMAFRANGA" - 5 francs, framed by olive branches. Below it is the French abbreviation: "BRB", standing for: Bank of the Republic of Burundi. Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right runs the text in French: "BANQUE DE LA REPUBLIQUE DU BURUNDI" - Bank of the Republic of Burundi.
  • Obverse
    In the central part, a composition: three five-pointed stars. Below them are two crossed oak branches. To the left, above, and to the right of it, the motto in Kirundi and French: "UEMWE - IBIKORWA - AMAJAMBERE", "UNITÉ - TRAVAIL - PROGRES" - Unity, Work, Progress. In the lower part along the edge of the coin is the year of issue: 1971, flanked by the mintmarks of the Brussels Mint: an anchor and a fir tree. To the left, above, and to the right is an inscription in Kirundi: "IBANKI YA REPUBLIKA Y'BUTRUNDI" - Bank of the Republic of Burundi.
