Along the upper edge arc is the country name Japan in Japanese: '日本國'. Below it is the year of mintage 1948 -- '昭和二十三年'. The inscriptions on the left and right are separated by raised dot elements. In the center is a large numeral 1, below it the inscription in English 'YEN', translating to 'one yen'.
