The central part features the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Spain. To the right and below the rim is an inscription in Latin: 'HISPAN.ET IND.REX.', which translates to 'King of Spain and the Indies'. Along the arc of the left edge of the coin are the Mexico City mint mark, the text '2R' - 2 reales, and 'T.H.'. The edge of the coin has decorative elements in the form of denticles.

The central part features the right-facing profile of King Charles IV of Spain. To the left and right along the edge is the text: 'CAROLUS.IIII.DEI.GRATIA.', which translates from Latin as 'Charles IV by the grace of God'.
