Along the upper edge of the coin, from left to right, is a Latin inscription 'IN HOC SIGNO VINCES', meaning 'In this sign, you shall conquer'. All words, including the beginning and end of the inscription, are separated by raised cross-shaped elements. In the central part is the coat of arms of the Brazilian Empire: the heraldic shield is crowned with an imperial crown and framed on three sides by a wreath formed by branches of a coffee tree on the left and tobacco on the right, tied at the base. On the shield, within a circular band of evenly spaced stars, is depicted an armillary sphere against the background of a cross potent.

Around the edge of the coin are decorative raised denticles. Along the rim: on the left, top, and right is a Latin inscription 'PETRUS. I. D.G.CONST. IMP. ET. PERP. BRAS.DEF.', translating to 'Peter I, by the Grace of God and the Constitution, Emperor and Perpetual Defender of Brazil'; at the bottom is the mint year '1824. R', flanked on both sides by raised cross-shaped elements. The symbol 'R' is the mint mark for Rio de Janeiro. In the central part, within a circular wreath, are large numerals '320', evenly surrounded by six four-petaled flowers and two, on the sides, six-petaled flowers.
