In the central part is the lesser coat of arms of the Belgian Congo: a heraldic shield topped with a grand ducal crown. On the shield is a small image of a rampant lion, with a five-pointed star in the upper left corner. The coat of arms divides the mint year '1960' into two parts: '19' on the left, '60' on the right. Along the rim are inscriptions in Dutch: at the top 'BELGISCH CONGO BELGE' (Belgian Congo), at the bottom the name of the territory under Belgian administration 'RUANDA-URUNDI', flanked on both sides by a five-pointed star.
