    In the central part, an image: a guard with a submachine gun (standing with his back) in front of a cage with prisoners. Above the cage, a hand; below it, the inscription 'L.100' (100 lire) and the mintmark of the Rome mint – 'R'. Along the edge arc: at the top, the state name 'CITTA’ DEL VATICANO' (Vatican City), framed by dots; at the bottom, three raised dots. All inscriptions are in Italian.
  • Obverse
    In the central part of the coin, the left profile of the Pope is struck. Along the edge arc of the coin from left to right runs the text in Latin - 'IOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. AN XVII' (John Paul II Supreme Pontiff 17th year as head of the Catholic Church), and the Gregorian year of minting '1995' in Roman numerals 'MCMXCV'. Below the truncation, the names of the artist and engraver 'E. Manfrini-Driutti inc'. In the lower part along the edge arc of the coin, three six-pointed stars.
