The central part features the denomination 'MONETA ROUBL' (COIN ROUBLE) in two lines. Above the denomination is the Crown of the Russian Empire. Below the denomination is a decorative divider consisting of two oppositely directed ornamental lines with a small raised dot between them. Below the divider is the year of mintage '1856'. Below the year is the abbreviation 'S.P.B.' (Saint Petersburg Mint). Along the left edge of the coin is a laurel branch, and along the right edge is an oak branch. The branches are tied together at the base with a ribbon forming a neat bow. The entire edge of the coin is struck with raised denticles.
  • Obverse
The central part depicts the State Emblem of the Russian Empire – a double-headed eagle, its heads crowned with two small crowns and a third, larger crown above them. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow – a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a dragon with a long spear. The shield is surrounded by the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called. The titular coats of arms are displayed on the wings: on the right – Kazan, Astrakhan, and Siberian; on the left – Polish, Taurican, and Finnish. In its right talon, the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left – an orb. Below the right talon is the letter 'F', and below the left talon is the letter 'B'. These are the initials of mintmaster Fedor Blum. The center of the obverse is enclosed within a braided rim. At the top is an eight-petaled flower, visually indicating the start of the inscription: CHISTAGO SEREBRA 4 ZOLOTNIKA 21 DOLIA (PURE SILVER 4 ZOLOTNIKS 21 PARTS). The rim is decorated with short denticles.
