    In the central part, a portrait facing right of Dutch navigator and founder of Cape Town, Jan van Riebeeck. Around the edge, the text 'Unity is Strength' in Afrikaans and English, separated by two decorative elements consisting of a cross and five dots: 'EENDRAG MAAK MAG. UNITY IS STRENGTH'. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
  • Obverse
    In the central part, two sparrows facing each other are depicted, sitting on a plant branch. Above the branch, the monogram 'KG' - the mark of engraver George Edward Kruger-Gray. Around the edge, inscriptions: left and right, the name of the state South Africa in Afrikaans and English: 'SUID-AFRIKA. SOUTH AFRICA'; at the top, separated by four-rayed stars, the mint year 1964; at the bottom, separated by two decorative elements consisting of a cross and five dots: '1/2 c.' - ½ cent. The edge of the coin features decorative raised denticles.
