    The central part features a full-length depiction of Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, holding an axe in his right hand, resting its haft on the ground. To the right of the image is the obverse of an ancient coin bearing the king's portrait. Along the edge, in English, the text reads from the top left and right: 'ROYAL HERITAGE - ALFRED THE GREAT', with the years of his reign '871 - 899' at the bottom.
