In the central part, against the background of a six-petaled flower, is a large numeral: "5", below it is the inscription 'somoni' in Tajik: "СОМОНӢ". Above is a crown, surrounded by seven stars. Along the arc of the lower edge is the year of minting: "2001".
Obverse
Along the rim are inscriptions in Tajik, at the top: "ҶУМҲУРИИ ТОҶИКИСТОН" - "REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN", at the bottom: "ПАНҶ СОМОНӢ" - "FIVE SOMONI". In the central part is the right-facing profile of the Persian poet Abu Abdallah Rudaki, below the neck truncation his name in Tajik: "РӮДАКӢ".
