    In the central part, an ox facing left. To its left is the Chinese character for 'Ox'. Along the upper edge of the coin from left to right are listed the years: 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, and 2009, separated by dots. Along the lower edge is the inscription: '$5' - five dollars.

    In the central part, an image of the seated Goddess of Liberty with a sheaf of ears of grain in her right hand. To her left is a rising sun, to her right are three flags with five-pointed stars, behind the flags is a globe of the Earth with the English inscription: 'LIBERTY'. Below at the feet of the goddess, in a shaped frame, is the mintage year 1997. Below the image of Liberty is a three-line inscription in English: 'LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE', which translates to: 'Love of liberty brought us here'. In the upper part, along the edge of the coin, is the name of the country, the Republic of Liberia, in English: 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA'. The edge of the coin features decorative elements in the form of denticles.
