To the left, behind the explorers, is a stylized depiction of a sailing ship in the ice, against a background of cliffs, and groups of people walking. On the left, at the top, is a two-line inscription in English "100 EURO". Along the edge of the coin from left to right is the text in English "ERNEST SHACKLETON ANTARCTICA THOM CREAN".

The central part features the coat of arms of Ireland - the Gaelic harp. To the left, ascending from bottom to top, is the inscription in Irish "ÉIRE", meaning "Ireland". To the right, descending from top to bottom, are the digits "2008", denoting the year of issue. A wreath of laurel leaves runs along the edge of the coin, tied with a ribbon on the right; at the bottom, the ribbon is executed as a flat bow with diverging laurel stems and stylized ribbon depictions. At the top, the edges of the wreath are closed by a stylized scroll. At the bottom, to the right of the harp, is the emblem of the International Polar Year (IPY).
