    In the central part, a South African oryx is depicted facing left, against a savanna background. Above, a two-line inscription in Setswana reads '5 PULA' (5 pula).
  • Obverse
    In the central part, the coat of arms of the state of Botswana. It consists of a traditional shield depicting: in the upper part three cogwheels, in the central part three waves, in the lower part a bull's head. At the base, the motto with the inscription 'Pula' (in Setswana 'Rain'), on both sides of the shield zebras: the zebra on the right holds a sorghum stalk, the zebra on the left holds an elephant tusk. Below the coat of arms, the mint year '1978'. In the upper part, along the rim of the coin, the country name 'BOTSWANA', below the inscription 'IPELEGENG' (Self-Sufficiency). All inscriptions are in Setswana.
