    In the central part, within a raised circle, a right-facing profile portrait of the Cherokee leader with his name in English 'Sequoyah'. Under his left arm is a sheet of paper, in his right hand a quill. To the left, along the upper rim, the country name in English 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', to the right the inscription 'ᏍᏏᏉᏯ ᏣᎳᎩᎯ ᎠᏰᎵ ᎡᎯ' (Sequoyah of the Cherokee Nation). Between the inscriptions is a seven-pointed star. Behind the quill, the inscription '$ 1', below it the artist's initials Chris Costello - 'CTC', on the paper under the index finger the engraver's initials Charles L. Vickers 'CLV'.
